Dozens of energy companies have told us how they would benefit from access to an easy-to-use screening tool that would help them make better, early-stage planning decisions that take into account historic and cultural resources. Yet today, spatial information about heritage resources is difficult and time-consuming to access. Important data are housed in multiple repositories, many with restricted access. Moreover, vast areas of the country have not been surveyed for historic and cultural resources– which can mean that energy developers are often in for surprises. Predictive modeling helps fill the information gap, using available data and expert knowledge to indicate where the risk of impacting heritage resources is high, low or moderate.

LEAP’s screening tool integrates heritage resource data from multiple sources within a single platform, allowing one-stop access to crucial data and analysis. Heritage management layers can be manipulated and analyzed in a GIS environment alongside other standard environmental and administrative layers. Regularly updated, LEAP’s screening tool provides essential and timely information for energy development planning, helping energy companies set the digital standard in proactive and cost-effective heritage management.
